EEOC Manages Inventory to Reduce Pending Charges


New strategies deployed to prioritize charges

EEOC instituted new strategies, using digital systems, to efficiently prioritize charges with merit and quickly close out investigations once sufficient information is received.  As a result of these efforts, in FY 2017 the EEOC resolved 99,109 charges and reduced the charge inventory by 16.2% to 61,621 cases, the lowest level in 10 years.  Also during the FY, EEOC handled more than 540,000 calls and 155,000 contacts regarding possible charge filing in field offices, resulting in 84,254 charges being ultimately filed.

Other notable FY 2017 facts

  • EEOC secured relief of approximately $484 million for victims of discrimination.  For private sector and state and local government employers, EEOC obtained $355.6 million in monetary relief through mediation, conciliation, and other administrative enforcement.  Another $86 million in relief was garnered for federal workers and applicants.
  • EEOC filed 184 merits lawsuits, including 124 on behalf of individuals, 30 non-systemic suits with multiple victims, and 30 systemic suits.  This number of lawsuits was double the number filed in FY 2016.
  • EEOC’s legal staff resolved 109 merits lawsuits for a monetary recovery of $42.4 million and achieved a favorable result in 90.8% of all district court resolutions.
  • EEOC’s outreach programs reached 317,000 people with participation in over 4,000 no-cost educational, training and outreach events.
  • To assist businesses, EEOC launched the online Small Business Resource Center and revamped its Youth@Work website which provides resources for the next generation of workers.
  • EEOC created a pilot program which allowed individuals in five EEOC offices to submit inquiries online, schedule interviews, and submit and receive charge information.  The program led to a nationwide launch of the EEOC Public Portal in November 2017.
