Trump Picks Former US Attorney Acosta to Lead DOL

May be first Hispanic to join Trump’s cabinet

R. Alexander Acosta, a current law school dean and former U.S. Attorney for South District of Florida was picked by President Trump to run the Department of Labor.  Acosta is current the dean of Florida International University College of Law and previously practiced law at Kirkland & Ellis LLP.  At one time Acosta was a National Labor Relations Board member and the first Hispanic to ascend to the top of the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division during the George W. Bush administration.   He also served as a law clerk for Justice Samuel A. Alito when he was a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

If confirmed Acosta will be the first Hispanic to join the president’s cabinet.  “He’ll be a tremendous secretary of Labor,” Trump said at a news conference in the east room of the White House, noting that Acosta was previously confirmed by the Senate three times.
